Why Mount Dora Deserves a Full Day (At Least)

Mount Dora is one of those Central Florida towns that locals have been quietly enjoying for years while the theme park crowds head elsewhere. The walkable downtown along Donnelly Street packs antique shops, art galleries, craft beer, lakefront parks, and genuinely good restaurants into a few compact blocks -- all overlooking Lake Dora. This guide covers where to eat, drink, explore, and spend time, organized by what kind of day you're having.

A Few More Worth Knowing

Violette Hill Hay Farm is a 30-acre hands-on petting farm offering capybara encounters, horse rides, hayrides, farm school classes, and seasonal events. Open most days; check hours before going with kids.

Sydonie Mansion is an 1883 Mediterranean Revival-style mansion on Lake Dora with wrap-around porches and live oak gardens, now primarily used as a wedding and event venue.

The Renaissance Building on Donnelly Street is a grand hotel built in 1922 that's been renovated as a restaurant and art studios -- and reportedly haunted, if that's your thing.

Tips for Your Visit

Parking fills fast on weekends. Downtown lots around Donnelly Street and 4th Avenue are convenient, but arrive early on Saturday mornings -- especially during festival season. The streets radiating out from the downtown core usually have street parking available.

Check hours before you go. Several of the restaurants and galleries are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Build your itinerary around that, especially if you're planning a weekday visit.

Art Stroll = 2nd Friday of the month. The Mount Dora Center for the Arts and galleries like Studio ArtFarm and Jane Slivka Gallery all participate in the monthly Art Stroll on Royellou Lane, running 6 to 8 PM.

The festivals bring big crowds. The annual Mount Dora Arts Festival in February draws 200,000+ visitors according to the Center for the Arts. If you're going then, treat downtown parking as a day-of logistics puzzle and plan extra time.

Boat tours book up. Both Premier Boat Tours and Rusty Anchor Mount Dora run daily, but weekends fill quickly. Reserve ahead if you have a specific tour in mind.

Pair it with nearby events. If you're making a longer trip out of it, the Worth the Drive guide to Florida's biggest events has context on what else is going on in the region.
